How we came to be The American Red Cross received authority to provide national disaster relief through a Congressional Charter, issued in 1905. Legislators designated Red Cross, while not a government agency, as the primary organization that would coordinate and execute a system of national and international relief in time of peace. The organization also would work to mitigate sufferings caused by pestilence, famine, fire, floods and other great national calamities, as well as devise and carry out measures for preventing those disasters. This Congressional Charter mandated Red Cross with an imposition of duties and obligations to the nation, disaster victims and people who generously support its work through their financial donations.
What we are called to do Red Cross disaster-relief work focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency needs. Whenever a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross is there providing shelter, food, clothing, health and mental health services to address people's basic human needs. In addition to those vital services, Red Cross makes sure that assistance is promptly and efficiently given to individuals and families affected by disaster, which in turn helps them resume normal daily activities and empowers them in their recovery process.
During a disaster, the Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims and guides those affected by disaster to additional available resources.
Tulsa Area Chapter American Red Cross Disaster Action Team workers assisted 1,878 family members affected by 668 fires and other disasters in our 2007 year. Red Cross provided $527,361 in financial assistance to help families with their immediate disaster relief needs. The Red Cross is not a government agency. Our assistance is made possible only through the generosity of caring people like you. To help ensure the Red Cross will be there for the next fire, flood or tornado, make your financial contribution.
